International Trauma Centre<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the most visible changes in emergency care was the transformation of the former Accident & Emergency Department into the International Trauma Centre (ITC).<\/p>

The transformation strengthened the hospital\u2019s capacity to manage trauma, emergencies and mass-casualty incidents while improving patient flow.<\/p>

Key changes included:<\/strong><\/p>

  • Oxygen points increased from 34 to 72<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • Trauma, emergency, and outpatient services were separated to improve patient flow.<\/li>
  • Emergency preparedness was strengthened for road crashes, fires, demonstrations, and other mass-casualty incidents.<\/li>
  • Weekly emergency attendance increased from approximately 400\u2013500 to 700\u2013900 patients<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Critical care capacity was expanded, with the hospital working towards increasing ICU capacity from 93 to 120 beds<\/strong> and adding 10 Critical Care Unit beds at the Prime Care Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>

    Oncology was also prioritised as a flagship Centre of Excellence. The existing Linear Accelerator was repaired, and a new LINAC installed<\/strong>, strengthening access to radiotherapy services.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Improving clinical services was accompanied by efforts to make the patient\u2019s journey through KNH easier, more responsive, and more dignified.<\/p>

    Listening and responding<\/strong><\/p>

    • Direct complaint lines were introduced for the CEO, Senior Director Clinical Services and Director of Nursing<\/strong>.<\/li>
    • Complaint investigation timelines were strengthened.<\/li>
    • Work began towards establishing a dedicated Public Complaints Department<\/strong> in collaboration with the Ombudsman.<\/li>
    • Improved directional signage was installed to make navigation easier.<\/li>
    • Golf-cart transport was introduced for elderly and critically ill patients, with more than 3,000 patients benefiting<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>

      1,600 staff confirmed<\/strong><\/p>

      One of the most significant workforce reforms during the year was the conversion of 1,600 employees to permanent and pensionable terms<\/strong>.<\/p>

      The reform strengthened job security, pension access, career progression and staff morale.<\/p>

      Strengthening Nursing leadership<\/strong><\/p>

      Nursing was elevated to a full Directorate<\/strong>, with the Director of Nursing reporting directly to the CEO.<\/p>

      Nursing management positions were also reorganised from 136 to 96<\/strong>, strengthening frontline supervision, accountability, and deployment of specialist nurses.<\/p>

      A culture of engagement<\/strong><\/p>

      Regular engagement platforms were strengthened, including:<\/p>

      • CEO Kamkunji meetings<\/li>
      • Departmental meetings<\/li>
      • Executive Council engagements<\/li>
      • Clinical Leadership Council meetings<\/li><\/ul>

        Structured dialogue was also maintained with KNUN, KMPDU, KUDHEIHA and SRC<\/strong> on staff welfare, remuneration and industrial relations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

          Prime Care Centre turnaround<\/strong><\/p>

          The revitalisation of the Prime Care Centre has unlocked significant new revenue streams for KNH, strengthened utilisation of the facility and enhanced the hospital\u2019s capacity to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.<\/p>
