KNH was established as a State Corporation in 1987 through Legal Notice No. 109 of 6th April 1987 as amended by the KNH Amendment Order 2021 with the following mandate:
- a) To receive patients on referral from other hospitals or institutions within or outside Kenya for specialized health care;
- b) To provide facilities for medical education for the University of Nairobi and for research either directly or through other co-operating health institutions;
- c) To provide facilities for education and training in nursing and other health and allied institutions;
- d) To participate, as a national referral hospital, in national health planning
Collaborations
It is currently the largest referral and teaching hospital in the country offering specialized services. It covers an area of 45.7 hectares within which it hosts partner institutions like: University of Nairobi (College of Health Sciences) and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC). The institution also works closely with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Government Chemist, National Radiation Protection Board, National Public Health Laboratories Services (NPHLS), National AIDS and STIs Control Program (NASCOP), National AIDS Control Council (NACC), National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) and African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF).Cutting-edge specialized services
KNH offers quality specialized healthcare to patients from the Great Lakes Region, Southern and Central Africa. These services include open heart surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics surgery, reconstructive surgery, burns management, critical care services, new born services, ophthalmology (cornea transplant), liver resections, oncology, palliative care and renal services (including kidney transplantation), among others.Hospital capacity
The hospital has a bed capacity of 2,400 beds and attends an annual number of 949,000 inpatients and 800,000 outpatients annually. With 50 wards, 24 out-patient clinics, 26 theatres, 82 ICU beds and an Accident & Emergency department.Our Mission
