The Diagnostics Services and Health Information Division provides Radiological, Laboratory, Farewell and Health Information services to support clinical excellence.
The Radiology Department has state-of-the-art equipment working 24/7. The department offers various specialized services to both adult and paediatrics which include:

- CT Scan
- MRI (sedation and anesthesia)
- Ultrasound
- Interventional Radiology – We carry out both non-vascular and vascular procedures. The basic and common ones include:
- Non-vascular:
- Image-guided biopsies- lung, mediastinal, bone, liver, renal, splenic, intra-abdominal masses, head and neck masses, prostate and any other masses.
- Image-guided aspiration or drainage of abnormal fluid collections e.g. ascites, pleural effusions, abscesses, seromas.
- Nephrostomy tube insertion and DJ stenting for obstructive uropathy
- Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiograms (PTC) with biliary drainage and stenting for obstructive jaundice
- Vascular:
- Diagnostic angiograms e.g. 4 vessels cerebral angiogram, selective angiograms of various vessels and vascular malformations, pre-surgical selective angiograms for tumours.
- Percutaneous embolization of malignant tumours e.g. TACE transarterial chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma, embolization of renal tumours and other malignancies, pre-surgical embolization of vascular tumours of any part of the body
- Percutaneous embolization of uterine fibroids, hypersplenism
- Percutaneous embolization of bleeding patients e.g. from trauma, bleeding tumours, postpartum haemorrhage, pelvic fractures, ulcerated bleeding tumours
- Balloon angioplasty and stenting of vascular strictures and occlusions e.g. impending gangrene for critical limb ischemia, renal artery stenosis, and occlusion of SVC from longstanding indwelling catheters like the dialysis catheters

NOTE:
- Bodies from outside KNH are received with Burial permits and admitted to the Private Wing only. Relatives are required to pay a deposit before admission.
- After 21 days (Adults) and 10 days (Babies) of storage, bodies are handed over to City Council for mass disposal if unclaimed.
- Relatives to clear bills a day earlier.

The Health Information Department is established to receive and document patients at the hospital reception; register and book appointments for patients to clinics and consultants; and store & retrieve medical records documents. It supports the use of data for learning the health system in Kenyatta National Hospital, by transforming data collection, display, transmission, storage, and its use to design improvement in health delivery at the hospital.
Services offered:
NHIF Preauthorization
Step 1: Make sure you have all the necessary documents.
- A copy of the NHIF preauthorization form with all filled sections.
- A copy of the patient’s ID/ birth certificate/ birth notification.
- A copy of the contributor’s ID
- A copy of the request form from the doctor
- A copy of the previous radiology report (if it was done)
Step 2: Make your way to counter 1/2/3
Step 3: Wait for NHIF to approve your request.
Step 4: Once approved, proceed to your next step
Discharge
Step 1: Make sure you have all the necessary documents.
- 2 photocopies of the discharge summary
- 2 photocopies of the patient’s National ID /birth certificate/ birth notification
- 2 photocopies of the contributor’s ID (for NHIF members)
- 2 photocopies of Linda mama’s card (for patients registered with Linda mama)
Step 2: Make your way to the billing counter at the Malipo Center.
Step 3: Get clearance from the billing counter.
