HOPE HOSTEL PROJECT
Background
- Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is the largest public referral hospital with comprehensive cancer treatment facilities.
- The Hospital receives cancer patients who travel from all corners of the country and the region to access treatment.
- In 2015, a survey was conducted in partnership with American Cancer Society (ACS) on more than 400 cancer patients receiving treatment at KNH, which showed 29% of patients had missed or delayed treatment due to high transport and accommodation costs.
- Many patients receiving treatment as outpatients are not able to meet these costs and end up sleeping on the Hospital benches and corridors.
Project Objective
To provide free accommodation for patients undergoing cancer treatment and their care giversProject Scope and Cost
- The project entails construction of a four storey building at a cost of Kshs. 230 million
- Equipment and Operation cost for the first 2 years is Ksh. 64 Million
- The structure will have a capacity of 156 beds and it will consist of
- a day respite area
- resource center
- prayer rooms
- other support facilities
- An additional Kshs. 200 million endowment fund will be set up to support the operations of the facility
- Total Project cost is Ksh 494 Million
Project Designs
- The project designs have been developed by Dexdign Architects on pro bono basis in consultation with the Kenyatta National Hospital, donors and the Hope Hostel Fundraising committee.
- The designs have been presented to Nairobi City County for approval, with the county waiving the approval fee. The project is managed jointly by KNH and Lexicon + ION who have brought together a team of engineers and quantity surveyors to support the project on pro bono basis.
Project Financing
- The hostel will be funded through a collaborative effort of KNH, American Cancer Society, Friends of Hope Hostel, Devki Group of Companies and other organizations/individuals.

This project involves the construction of Burns Management Center and Paediatric Emergency Center. The Burns Centre will contain 82 general ward beds, 14 ICU beds and 6 HDU beds while the Pediatric Centre will contain 82 general ward beds, 24 ICU and 6 High Dependency beds. The purpose of the project is to develop a facility that will be a centre of excellence in paediatric emergency and burns management and in addition facilitate training of specialists. The estimated construction cost is Kshs. 2.9 billion which is financed partially by GoK and through a concessionary loan from BADEA (Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa), Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
Paediatrics Emergency and Burns Management Centre
The project involves the construction and equipping of a state-of-the-art Cancer Centre of Excellence with consultation and treatment rooms, radiotherapy, training, and research facilities. Phase 1 of the project is a three-storey building i.e. ground to the second floor with a half-basement to house the laboratory, chemotherapy, outpatient clinics, and related services. The project has been financed by the Ministry of Health at an estimated cost of Kshs. 250 Million. It is 95% complete.
CTC Ongoing Project
The project is envisioned to be constructed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model where an external partner is engaged in financing, construction, and operationalization of the hospital. The procurement of external parties is being directed by the PPP Act 2021 and supported by the PPP Directorate at National Treasury.
